Long Ago Spring

Come, please arrive

Beautiful springtime

Because when you come

The birds they sing

The flowers bloom

The stars they shine

And the weather is kind

Too hot, my sweat dripping down

The sun is too bright

Nowhere to look but the ground

I can’t survive without a little cold breeze

But a wall is blocking it from me

So I stay here patiently

Waiting for spring

I see brown, orange, and yellow all around

The site looks wonderful, but everything is falling down

The only sounds are the winds that blow

And the crackle of leaves on the concrete floor

Even my sweater isn’t a comfort, not anymore

Doesn’t have the same warmth I've felt before

So I stay here patiently

Waiting for spring

I am not in a place where it gets bleached white

The water doesn't freeze, there isn’t any ice

But my hands are so cold

I can’t understand why

And like an infection, it makes its way to my soul

Not a hundred jackets can keep me warm anymore

It’s finally springtime again

It's what I've wanted for months

But my eyes can’t see the beauty that once was

The birds sing a sad melody

The flowers are somehow full of color, but seem so dead to me

While the stars fade gradually

The weather is kind

My life is gold

But deep down, I know spring will never go back to how it once was

Long ago…

Hello! My name is Mariam Ahmed Khalaf. I am from Egypt, and moved to Saudi Arabia about 7 years ago. As of 2025, I am a 15 year old freshman in high school. I have loved and written poetry for as long as I can remember. I see poetry, along with many other arts, as amazing ways to indirectly express emotions and thoughts in a creative and artistic manner.
